Get the digicam look without buying a digicam

Somewhere in the last two years, a battered Canon PowerShot or Olympus Stylus from a junk drawer became a genuine flex again. Gen Z started buying up early-2000s point-and-shoots, and camera makers noticed: according to CIPA data reported by PetaPixel, worldwide shipments of built-in-lens ("compact") cameras rose from 1.88 million units in 2024 to 2.44 million in 2025 — roughly 30% growth in a single year, in a camera category most of the industry had written off a decade ago. Nobody's chasing megapixels here. As lifestyle reporter Elizabeth Gulino put it on NPR, people are "feeling really nostalgic for that era" when everyone brought a digicam to the party. Photographer Casey Fatchett, quoted in the same story, described what the old camera flash actually does to a photo: an "airy, floaty and ethereal" look, a deliberate rejection of how much invisible processing a modern phone applies before you ever see the shot. What actually makes a photo read as "digicam," not just old

Strip the nostalgia down to its visual mechanics and three things are doing almost all of the work, none of which requires an actual 2004 sensor:

  • The frame is 4:3, not 3:4 or 9:16. Phone cameras today default to a taller ratio; small-sensor compacts from the point-and-shoot era shot 4:3 almost universally, because that's the aspect their sensors and LCD screens were built around. A photo cropped back to 4:3 immediately stops looking like a phone shot, before a single color is touched.
  • The color is paler and flatter, not punchier. This is the part Fatchett was describing — small on-camera flashes and simpler in-camera color processing produced a softer, slightly blown-out look, the opposite of a modern phone's default high-contrast, high- saturation processing.
  • A corner date stamp. A lot of consumer digicams from that era had a clock-overlay feature that burned the date directly into the corner of the photo in a small colored digit font — which is exactly the detail people are recreating by hand when they caption a photo "2004 me" today. Nothing else in a photo says "this predates smartphones" as fast as a stamped date sitting in the corner.

Doing it, step by step

  1. Crop to 4:3. Open the photo in NearIMG's Crop tool and pick the 4:3 preset from the ratio row (alongside 1:1, 16:9 and 3:4) instead of leaving the photo at its phone-shot ratio. This one change does more to sell the era than any color edit.
  2. Fade the color in Adjust. Nudge brightness up a little past 100% and saturation down a little below it — both sliders run 0–200%, with 100% meaning unchanged, and the thumbnail updates live so you can see when it crosses from "faded flash" into "just looks washed out." If you'd rather have the browner, more uniformly monochrome "old print" look instead of the pale flash look, the tool's built-in sepia filter is a different, one-click option — the two aren't the same effect, so pick based on which photo you're starting from.
  3. Stamp a corner date in Watermark. What this honestly doesn't do

Being straightforward about where a software edit and an actual old sensor still part ways:

  • It's not simulating a lens or a flash. Real digicam grain, chromatic aberration and the specific physics of a small on-camera flash bouncing off a subject come from actual optics and a small CCD sensor. Brightness and saturation sliders move a photo's tone in the right direction; they don't model a lens.
  • The date stamp is a plain text watermark, not a period-accurate font.
