Why LinkedIn's own numbers make this worth getting right

LinkedIn has been citing the same headline figure since 2017, and its own Sales Blog still runs it today: members with a profile photo get 21 times more profile views and 9 times more connection requests than members without one. A 2026 wire report on the current AI-headshot boom cites the same LinkedIn data with a slightly different pairing — "up to 21 times more profile views and up to 36 times more messages." A reporter for Entrepreneur.com tested three of them directly: Aragon AI's own signup flow demanded, in the reporter's words, "a minimum of six selfies taken on different days, with no mirror or group pictures," while FastShot AI would generate a headshot from a single upload for free — with a catch stated in its own terms: images from free accounts are public, and only a paid subscription makes the render private. That's not a hypothetical privacy tradeoff; it's the stated deal for whoever doesn't pay.

None of this is a scandal — it's the mechanism these tools use in exchange for a genuinely different result: an alternate backdrop, lighting, and outfit that no phone camera in your pocket actually captured. It's also a fast-growing category. Market researcher MarketsandMarkets projects the broader AI image-generation market growing from $8.7 billion in 2024 to $60.8 billion by 2030 — headshots are one slice of that, not the whole of it. But if what's actually wrong with your current photo is the crop, the pixel count, the file size, or the lighting — not the backdrop or the outfit — none of that requires uploading a single selfie anywhere.
