Why convert JPG to PNG locally instead of through an upload form?

JPG-to-PNG conversion is usually a preparation step before further editing, so the resulting file is about to be opened in another app anyway — there's no reason a conversion server needs to see it in between. How it works

This direction is preparation, not compression: converting JPG to PNG freezes the image in a lossless container before further editing, so however many times the PNG is subsequently opened and re-saved, no additional generation loss accumulates — every save of a JPG, by contrast, re-compresses it. Expect a larger file, and remember the conversion is a snapshot: compression artifacts already baked into the JPG are preserved exactly, not repaired.

Does converting to PNG improve quality?
