Why convert JPG to PNG locally instead of through an upload form?
JPG-to-PNG conversion is usually a preparation step before further editing, so the resulting file is about to be opened in another app anyway — there's no reason a conversion server needs to see it in between. NearIMG produces the lossless PNG directly in your browser and saves it straight to your device.
How it works
- Drop in JPG files — one or a batch.
- There's nothing to configure: the output is lossless, so no quality trade-off exists.
- Click Convert and download the PNGs (a ZIP when there are several).
This direction is preparation, not compression: converting JPG to PNG freezes the image in a lossless container before further editing, so however many times the PNG is subsequently opened and re-saved, no additional generation loss accumulates — every save of a JPG, by contrast, re-compresses it. Expect a larger file, and remember the conversion is a snapshot: compression artifacts already baked into the JPG are preserved exactly, not repaired.
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No — a JPG is already compressed, so PNG preserves it exactly but cannot add back lost detail.
When should I use PNG?
For further editing, sharp text or line art, or when you need lossless quality; the file is usually larger than JPG.
Are the pixels changed at all by the conversion?
No — the PNG stores exactly the pixels the JPG decoded to. The conversion adds no loss of its own; it just prevents any future loss.
